Simpson Wins Hoosier Classic Championship, Women’s Bowling Falls in Quarters

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- KT Simpson of the University of Pikeville women's bowling team finished first out of a field of 391 to claim the 47th Annual Hoosier Classic individual championship on Sunday at Western Bowl.

Simpson tallied a total pinfall of 1,966 to help the Bears finish second overall in the team standings through nine games. The top eight teams then qualified for a match-play Baker bracket where UPIKE lost in the quarterfinals to Ursuline (Ohio).

UPIKE had finished with 9,088 total pins as a team in qualifying, trailing only Wichita State (Kan.) with 9,257. Newman (Kan.) rounded out the top three with 8,986 pins, while Ursuline had clocked in seventh with a score of 8,685 before going on to upset UPIKE.

Simpson sat in third place individually coming into Sunday, but her final four games helped her leap into the No. 1 position. In the sixth game, she posted a high score of 253, followed by games of 214, 203 and 239 to claim the title by six pins over Newman's Caycee Landers.

UPIKE's other top individual performer was Shelby Fromm, finishing in 21st place with a score of 1,790, including a high game of 259 in her third attempt.

Up Next

UPIKE moves on to the postseason with the USBC Singles Sectionals and ITC sectionals on March 11-13 in a location to be announced soon. Qualifiers at those events move on to the USBC Intercollegiate Championships on April 18-23 in Wichita, Kan.
