SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – It took just one goal from Makayla Mendoza in the first minute to get the University of Pikeville women's soccer team past Benedictine-Springfield (Ill.) 1-0 on Saturday.
Mendoza took a pass from Jami Mullins just 36 seconds into the match and finished it into the back of the net for the game-winner.
Chelsea Schulte did her part in goal for the Bears to register a shutout, making one save against a Benedictine team that fired just four shots for the match with one on frame. Pikeville took nine shots with all but two coming on goal.
That kept goalkeeper Lindsay Taylor busy, being forced to make six saves with the one goal allowed. Mendoza, Kayla Scott and Kaitlyn Abdon paced the Bears with two shots each. Both of Scott and Abdon's attempts were on goal.
Cathy Tram took all four shots for Benedictine-Springfield.
The Bears are back on the pitch at 5 p.m. ET on Wednesday for the Mid-South Conference home opener against Bluefield (Va.) at the Bob Amos Soccer Complex.
