Women’s Soccer Routs Warren Wilson, Matches 2013 Win Total

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – With a 5-2 rout of Warren Wilson, the University of Pikeville women's soccer team avenged its only loss of the season and matched its win total from 2013 on Wednesday.

The Owls topped the Bears 2-1 in overtime on Sept. 25, but this time around UPIKE controlled the game from the opening kickoff as Jasmine Davis scored in the first minute, followed by another score in the 17th and Kaitlyn Abdon adding a third in the 18th to put UPIKE up 3-0 at the break.

The Owls fought back with two goals early in the second half, but UPIKE didn't let another collapse happen as it secured the win with another goal from Abdon in the 71st minute and a 90th-minute counter from Carmen Koster.

UPIKE improves to 7-1 overall, matching last season's win total when it finished 7-8-1. The Bears are now in the heart of their Mid-South Conference schedule as six of the remaining nine games will come against league competition, including a meeting with No. 3 Cumberland (Tenn.) on Saturday at the Bob Amos Complex.

Give Warren Wilson credit for responding to a tough start on Wednesday night as it got quick second half scores from Marisa Romeo and Bianca Canizio in the 59th and 64th minutes. But luckily the Bears got three saves from freshman goalkeeper Caitlyn Hunt who tallied her third straight win and kept the pressure on Owl keeper Kendra Orians by outshooting their opponent 17-8.

That mark includes a 14-5 advantage in shots on goal as Orians was forced to make nine saves while allowing the five goals. UPIKE also had the lead in corner kicks 9-3 and was whistled for 10 fouls, compared to five for Warren Wilson.

Abdon paced the UPIKE offense with seven shot attempts and a game-high six shots on goal, while Davis added three shots, all of which were on frame. Only one of the Bears' goals were assisted as Abdon dished off the pass from Davis' second score. Abdon's 18th-minute strike went down as the game winner, giving the Bears enough goals to win in the first half alone.

Canizio led the Owls with four total shots and three on target and Romeo chipped in with two shots, including one on goal.
