MSC Championship: No. 6 Women’s Soccer Falls at No. 3 Campbellsville 6-1 in Opening Round

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- Campbellsville's four first-half goals were too much for the University of Pikeville to overcome as its best season since 2008 came to an end after a 6-1 loss in the opening round of the Mid-South Conference Women's Soccer Championship on Friday.

Aris Kuntz got things started for the Tigers (13-6, 5-2 MSC) in the 15th minute off a cross from Rachel Veatch, but the Bears didn't back down, instead tying things up at 1-1 two minutes later on a solo goal by Kaitlyn Abdon.

But a 15-3 Campbellsville lead in total shots eventually took its toll as it added first-half scores from Mhairi Fyfe in the 27th minute, Veatch in the 36th and Aris Kuntz in the 41st.

After leading the Bears (8-9, 2-5 MSC) in shots 11-1 in the first 45 minutes, the Tigers slowed down for a 4-2 lead in the second, but two of them were goals by Fyfe in the 65th and 66th minutes to give her a hat trick.

UPIKE's senior goalkeeper Chelsea Schulte ended her career with five saves and six goals allowed in 70 minutes of action before giving up the final 20 to newcomer Caitlyn Hunt. CU's Amanda Howard went the full 90, collecting two saves and allowing the one goal.

Abdon fired two of UPIKE's three shots and Schulte booted the other after leaving the goal in the second half to become a field player. The goal from Adbon added to her team-leading total of 13 as Jasmine Davis was the next highest goal scorer with five.

Schulte, who played and started in just 12 of the Bears' 17 games due to injury, finishing the season with 70 saves and 33 goals allowed for a 2.8 goals-against average and three shutouts.

Campbellsville, which didn't allow UPIKE to try a corner kick while taking 10 of its own, was led by Fyfe with five shots, including four on goal and Kuntz and Veach with three shots each.

Fouls were even at 6-6 and there were no cautions in the game. Veatch, who scored a goal late in the first half, also dished out three assists for CU.

The Tigers advance to Thursday's semifinals against second-seeded Cumberland (Tenn.) at 3 p.m. ET in Campbellsville.
