ASHLAND, Va. -- A 4-2 lead after winning the top-three singles matches did not hold up as the University of Pikeville men's tennis team lost 5-4 to Randoph-Macon on Thursday.
The Yellow Jackets won two of three doubles points and went on to win the bottom three singles matches to steal a win. The Bears traveled with just five players, meaning it would start the match down 2-0 with losses at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.
Andres Alvarez and Bailey Horne were the lone singles duo to win, topping Baxter Carter and Alex Hein 8-2 at the top seed. The 1-1 tie was broken though when Erik Moulton and Grant Sarver won 8-3 over Devon Sgubin and Hassas Haider.
UPIKE got in a groove during singles, starting with Horne topping Sarver 6-3, 6-2 at the top seed. No. 2 Alvarez won as well, 6-2, 6-0 over Hein and Devon Sgubin won 6-4, 6-0 over Carter.
But trailing 4-2, Randolph-Macon was on a mission at the bottom of the singles order, starting with a forfeit win at No. 6. In matches contested, No. 4 Kenton Hall lost to Shane Berry 6-0, 6-0 and No. 5 Haider fell to Moulton 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (11-9).
