Freshmen shine as women's soccer downs Grace Christian

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - UPIKE women's soccer picked up its first win of the season on Friday and it came thanks to a handful of newcomers. The Bears defeated Grace Christian 3-2, with the winning goalkeeper and all three goals and their corresponding assists recorded by freshmen.

Freshman forward Taylor Stamper got UPIKE on the board in the 22nd minute for her first career goal, which was assisted by Jillian Kidd. Grace Christian tied the game up a few minutes later and the match went into halftime in a 1-1 tie.

GCU took the lead shortly after the second half began, but then another freshman took over.

Emily Branham recorded a second half brace, scoring in the 57th and 85th minute to tie and give UPIKE the lead back. Those were also her first career goals.

Grace Christian placed more shots on goal in the game, but thanks to the strong work from freshman keeper Elizabeth Lukens in goal, UPIKE was able to walk away with the win. Lukens recorded seven saves in three opportunities in her first career start.
