Pikeville, KY – The University of Pikeville women's soccer team defeated the visiting Freed-Hardeman Lions Saturday afternoon at the Bob Amos Grass Field, 3-1. The game was tied at the half before a pair of second half goals coming from
Sophie Kluesner and
Ellie Webb sealed the victory for the Bears. This is their first Mid-South Conference win since they defeated University of the Cumberlands 3-2 on Sep. 27, 2014.
They took 14 shots in the game with four on goal, with both those marks being the most they have recorded against an MSC opponent this season. After the win, they will return to action tomorrow afternoon for Senior Day when they host the Allen University Yellow Jackets at the Bob Amos Grass Field.
Tied At The Break
After Freed-Hardeman had two saves within the first 30 minutes of the game, freshman
Isabella Caldwell broke through for the Bears in the 35th minute, scoring her fourth goal of the year.
Lauren Mulkey threw it in to Caldwell, where she beat her defender and beautifully floated a ball over the keeper's head and into the left side of the net for a 1-0 lead.
The Lions quickly answered in the 38th minute to send it to the break at 1-1.
Claiming The Victory
After a scoreless start to the second half for both teams,
Sophie Kluesner legged the game-winner for UPIKE in the 68th minute.
Lillie Kluesner sent a corner into the box before
Riley Collett had a touch and the Lions briefly possessed it before
Sophie Kluesner found the ball and sent an unassisted strike into the back of the net.
Their final goal came in the 74th minute after
Emily Webb sent a free-kick high into the air where
Ellie Webb beat all the defenders down the field and got a touch on the ball and beat the goalie for the 3-1 lead.
