UPIKE Swimming Begins New Era At Midway

Versailles, Ky. - The 2022-23 season for the University of Pikeville men's and women's swimming programs began Saturday with a quad-meet hosted by Midway University. Participating alongside UPIKE were Union College, UT-Southern and the hosts, the Midway University Eagles. 

UPIKE's swim programs underwent a lot of changes this offseason, including the hire of first-year Head Coach Bernie Haney. Haney, a UPIKE graduate and 1999 Hall of Fame Inductee, brings 17 years of club swim coaching experience in Paintsville, Ky. to the men's and women's teams. 

Men's Team: 

The UPIKE men's team was represented in the 100 yard backstroke, the 50 yard freestyle, the 100 yard freestyle and the 100 yard butterfly. 

In the 100 yard backstroke, Evan Vanlierop finished with a time of 1:25.48. Vanlierop also finished with 33.18 in the 50 yard freestyle and a 1:17.65 in the 100 freestyle. Isaiah Juneau finished sixth with a 26.57 in the 50 freestyle and a 1:00.33 in the 100 freestyle. Jeaneau participated in the 100 yard butterfly and finished fourth with a 1:09.34. Favio Govea finished the 50 freestyle with 29.21 and 1:15.30 in the 100 freestyle. 

In the head-to-head matchups against Midway, the Eagles finished with a 114-25 win. Against Union College and UT-Southern, the Bears fell 76-26 and 179-13. 

 

Women's Team: 

The UPIKE women's swim squad participated in the 100 yard backstroke, 100 yard breaststroke, 50 yard freestyle, and the 100 yard freestyle. 

Kylie Hudson finished 1:41.66 in the 100 backstroke. Hudson also partook in the 100 breaststroke and finished behind teammate Madelyn Smith. Madelyn Smith finished fourth in the 100 breaststroke, fourth in the 50 freestyle, and fifth in the 100 freestyle. Luisa Diaz Casternda swam in the 50 freestyle and finished in 38.12. 

The women's team went 1-2 in the head-to-head matchups. UPIKE won 51-0 over Union, but fell to Midway 146-20 and 162-19 to UT-Southern.

Bernie Haney's first meet as head coach of UPIKE was a success. The Bears look to build on that success as they prepare for a matchup with Shawnee State in Portsmouth, Ohio on November 19th.
