Women's soccer shuts out Rio Grande
The University of Pikeville women's soccer team picked up their first win of the season on Wednesday night, knocking off the University of Rio Grande 2-0.

The win squared the record for the Bears at 1-1 on the season, and was the first win for a UPike athletics team this academic year.

The Bears took a 2-0 lead to halftime thanks to scoring on both first-half shots on goal. The first goal came from senior
Brekel Tibbs, who beat the keeper unassisted with 36:57 to play in the first half.

The second goal was scored by sophomore
Julia Pinson off a pass from
Kylie Ritter. It came with 27:36 to play before halftime.

Rio Grande (0-1) had two shots on goal in the first half, both were turned away by junior keeper
Millie Conod.

Conod finished the game with saves on all four shots on goal for the Red Storm. They were taken by junior Charlotte Pilgrim, sophomore Saskia Vos, freshman Amora Albano and freshman Morgan Fannin.

UPike finished with four shots on goal. In addition to the goals, seniors
Kylie Gollihue and
Brianna Fortman had shots that were turned away by Rio Grande senior Morgan Nutter

The Bears are off for a week before they take on No. 15 Cumberland University. The game will be played on Wednesday, August 30 at 1 p.m. at Bob Amos Park.

Rio Grande travels to Milligan on Saturday, September 2 for a 10:30 a.m. match.
