MIDWAY, Ky. – The Eagles of Midway University took a 2-0 lead to the half on Thursday afternoon and made it stand up in a 3-1 win over the University of Pikeville.

Midway improved to 2-0 on the season while UPike fell to 1-3.

Midway took the lead in the 16
th minute on an unassisted goal by Mariana Casey. Less than two minutes later, Haylee Applegate scored to make it 2-0.

The lead remained there until the 56
th minute when Evie Claire found the back of the net to push the lead to 3-0.

The Bears avoided the shutout late when junior
Alix Herter scored on a pass from senior
Abbie Hibbs. The goal came with 8:30 remaining in the contest.

It was Herter's first goal of the season and the fourth of her career at UPike. For Hibbs, it was her first trip to the scoring column as a college player.

The Bears recorded 15 shots in the game, eight of which were on goal. Midway's goalkeeper combination of junior Caylee Thompson (one save) and junior Yasmeen Shalash (six) turned away seven of them.

Herter was the only Bear with multiple shots on net with three.

Millie Conod faced 10 shots on goal from the Eagles and turned them away seven times.

UPike will begin play in the Appalachian Athletics Conference on Saturday afternoon, hosting Bryan College at 1 p.m.
