Bears wrap up MSC regular-season title

Enjoy first-, sixth-place finishes

 
 
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Pikeville men's bowling team picked up another win over the weekend and in doing so, won the regular season championship in the Mid-South Conference.
 
The Bears took the title in Saturday's Lynne Jordan Memorial and finished sixth in Sunday's Brandon Burris Memorial. Both tournaments had 21 teams competing, as the league allows outside competition.
 
The win marks the third consecutive season the Bears have won the MSC regular season title and gave Coach Andrew Dekowski a championship in his first season as head coach.
 
UPike finished with a record of 26-2, five games ahead of second-place Tennessee Wesleyan, which finished at 21-7.
 
On Saturday, the Bears posted a score of 6,027 to outdistance Webber International (Fla.)  which finished at 5,999. Among Mid-South teams, Cumberland University was sixth at 5,807.
 
In the junior varsity division, UPike's teams finished fifth and seventh out of 14 competing teams.
 
Sophomore Josh Maslanich was the top individual bowler, placing fifth out of 256 competitors with a total of 917 and a four-game average of 229.25. Junior Eli Mayberry was seventh, totaling 905 and averaging 226.25.
 
Graduate student Bryce Oliver was 13th in the field at 878, averaging 219.50. Senior Chris LeSueur was 15th, totaling 870 for an average of 217.50. Freshman Ethan Ackerman finished 21st, with a four-game score of 851 for an average of 212.75.
 
In Sunday's Brandon Burris Memorial, Webber International came out on top with a score of 6,022, followed by McKendree (Ill.) at 5,738. The Bears were sixth with a score of 5,394.
 
LeSueur was the top individual for the Bears, finishing 15th with an average of 212. He was followed by Oliver, who averaged 208.75 to finish 18th. A total of 258 bowlers were registered in the Burris Memorial.
 
Junior Larry Iagulli was 28th, averaging 199.5.
 
The Bears are back in action Feb. 1-2, traveling to Lawrenceville, Ga., to compete in the NAIA Southeast Open.
