Boyd leads Bears past Bryan in AAC opener

The University of Pikeville women's soccer team opened AAC play with a 5-0 win over Bryan (Tenn.) College on Saturday afternoon at Bob Amos Park.
 
UPike (3-0-1, 1-0 in the AAC) scored early and often, taking a 3-0 lead to the half.
 
Bryan (0-3-1, 0-1) had two first-half shots on goal, but both were turned away by junior keeper Allyson Gonzalez.
 
The Bears needed only 1:29 to dent the scoreboard. It came when junior Jayla Boyd easily beat the keeper from point-blank range off a pass from junior Charlene Lofqvist.
 
The scored moved to 2-0 Lofqvist picked up a steal and scored an unassisted goal in the 21st minute.
 
Before the half, a free kick by junior Kylie Ritter in the 38th minute from 22 yards made it 3-0.
 
The initial goal of the second half came in the 55th minute. Again it was Boyd, this time on a dish by sophomore Sara Ritter.
 
Boyd, a Beavercreek, Ohio, product, now has four goals and four assists through four games.
 
The final score came in the 89th minute. Senior Julia Pinson scored when senior Megan Stringer hit her with a pass.
 
The Bears remain in league play but take to the road on Wednesday when they visit Knoxville, Tenn., to play Johnson University. Game time is 5 p.m.
