CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Campbellsville University scored five times in the second half to pull away from the University of Pikeville on Tuesday for a 6-2 win.
UPike tied the game at 1-1 when junior
Sara Ritter scored early in the second half, but the Tigers finished the game with five of the final six goals to improve to 3-0-1 on the early season.
The goal was Ritter's second in three games this season.
From there, however, Campbellsville took over. It scored the only first-half goal of the contest when Marta Prieto found the net on a penalty kick in the 18th minute.
Ritter's goal evened the match, but that lasted only 2:30 before Fiona Jolly scored without the benefit of an assist. Four minutes later, Amelie Matheis hit the second penalty kick of the game for Campbellsville to make the score 3-1.
In the 65th minute, senior
Jayla Boyd scored her first goal of the season to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Campbellsville, however, scored three times in a four-minute stretch to put the game away. They came from Julia Ogren, Prieto and Laura Munoz, the last of which came on another penalty kick.
UPike (1-2) had eight shots on goal. Ritter, Boyd and
Rebekah Christopher had two each, while freshmen
Samantha Chapman and
Iselle Reding had one each.
The Bears will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 9 when they visit the University of Rio Grande. The action will begin at 5 p.m.
