PIKEVILLE, Ky. — The University of Pikeville men's and women's tennis teams turned in a dominant performance Saturday at the Bob Amos Complex, sweeping Shawnee State as the men earned a 7-0 victory and the women claimed a 6-1 win. The Bears combined to win 13 of 14 team points, highlighted by strong performances in both doubles and singles competition.
MTENNIS vs Shawnee State, W 7-0
UPIKE opened the men's match with a sweep of doubles play. Anton Hofmann and Rafael Gonzalez earned a 6-3 victory at No. 1 doubles over Martin Bernades and Robin Baransi, while Ahmed Hassairi and Luciano Correa posted an identical 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles against Nacho Martinez and Jacob Williams. Daniel Munoz and Roberto de La Torre earned the No. 3 doubles point.
The Bears carried that momentum into singles play, winning all six points. Gonzalez defeated Bernades 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, while Hofmann followed with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Baransi at No. 2. Munoz picked up a 6-1, 6-4 win over Williams at No. 3 singles, and de La Torre defeated Martinez 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4. Correa added a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Alonso Salines at No. 5, while Hassairi secured the No. 6 point by default.
The performance resulted in a 7-0 shutout for the Bears.
WTENNIS vs Shawnee State, W 6-1
The UPIKE women followed with a 6-1 victory, winning all three doubles points and five of the six singles points. Emily Triplett and Jada Adkins opened doubles play with a 6-0 win over Maria Pia and Thandiwe Reynolds at No. 1. Carpenter and Krumm Maurer earned the No. 2 doubles point, while Faisal and Quintero secured the No. 3 point.
In singles, Quintero battled Pia at No. 1 before falling 6-4, 6-1, giving Shawnee State its lone point of the match. Faisal answered with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Reynolds at No. 2 singles, while Krumm Maurer posted a 6-0, 6-0 shutout against Alaska Villanelle at No. 3. Carpenter, Adkins and Triplett each earned their respective singles points by default to complete the 6-1 team victory.
The Bears combined for a 13-1 team result against Shawnee State in their home matches at the Bob Amos Complex. UPIKE will return to action Sept. 24-27 at the ITA Tournament in Owensboro, Ky.
