HUNTINGTON, W.V. - Junior Kelvin Kurgat led the University of Pikeville men's cross country team Friday at the Thundering Herd Invite, hosted by Marshall University.
Kurgat paced the Bears to a fifth-place team finish in the men's 5K race, finishing 22nd overall with a time of 16:42.1.
Sophomore Josh Martinez followed Kurgat, crossing the finish line in 16:59.0 to place 30th. Sophomore Rylen Rash recorded UPIKE's third-fastest time, finishing 43rd in 17:55.5.
Sophomore Gunter Young followed in 44th place with a time of 17:59.8, while freshman Jarend Zimbelman rounded out Pikeville's top five with a 18:22.3 finish.
Sophomore Cort Daniel and junior Bruce Coleman also competed for the Bears, finishing in 19:38.3 and 20:12.9, respectively.
UPIKE's top five runners combined for a total time of 1:27:59, averaging 17:36 per runner with a team spread of 1:41.
The Bears' top seven runners posted a combined time of 2:07:50, averaging 18:16 per runner.
UPIKE returns to action on September 18 at the Midway XC Invitational in Versailles, Ky.
