Georgetown blanks UPike 2-nil

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The University of Pikeville men's soccer team fell short Friday evening in a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Georgetown College.

The Bears' overall record falls to 2-4 following the loss, and they remain winless in the Mid-South Conference (0-2).

The first half was a rough one for the Bears, who managed only two shots in the opening 45 minutes. Georgetown, with 11 first half shots, was able to play much more aggressively by controlling possession.

UPike goalkeeper Sheldon Thomas held firm, recording seven saves before halftime. His counterpart, Georgetown's Dan Rothwell, had a much easier time saving UPike's only shot on goal of the half.

The second half saw the game's first goal when Georgetown's Taylor Shaver was able to score unassisted in the 52nd minute.

With the Tigers playing a man down, the Bears appeared to have an opportunity to challenge Georgetown, but were held to just three shots in the half, only one of which was on goal. Georgetown eventually iced the contest with a goal by Tyler Whitehouse in the 86th minute.

Georgetown had a decisive 13-0 advantage in corner kicks taken against UPike, as well as taking 21 shots to UPike's five. The Bears managed only two shots on goal in the game to Georgetown's 13.

The Bears will take the pitch once more on Tuesday at 7 p.m. when they travel to Johnson University.
