Andrew Young sank 3-of-4 free throws in the final 8.0 seconds to help the University of Pikeville hold off the University of Rio Grande 82-78Thursday night.
The win improved Pikeville to 11-6 on the season and 3-4 in the Mid-South Conference. The Red Storm slipped to 9-8 overall and 1-4 in the league.
UPIKE held a 73-62 lead after senior
Chris McHenry nailed a three-point basket with 4:50 left. But over the next 1:30, the stubborn Red Storm cut the lead to six, 75-69, hitting 7-of-8 from the free throw line.
Junior
Trevor Setty sank two tosses with 3:09 left, but Rio followed with a three-point basket from straight away by sophomore Jermaine Warmack. After he sank one of two from the line, a putback by junior Dominick Haynes with 27 seconds left cut the Bear lead to 77-75.
The teams traded points before Young made one of two with 8.0 seconds left to give the Bears an 80-77 lead. Senior Darriel Hunter went to the line with 3.9 seconds left for two shots. He missed the first but sank the second.
The Storm sent Young back to the stripe with 2.3 seconds left, where he put the game away by making both shots.
Young led the Bears with 23 points. At the half he was 7-of-8 from the floor and had 16 markers. Setty followed with 21, hitting 4-of-8 from the arc, and sophomore
Josh Whitaker joined them in double figures with 12.
Rio Grande had four players in double figures, getting 23 from Warmack and junior Turrell Morris. Junior Dominick Haynes followed with 15, with senior Shaun Gunnell finishing with 12.
The Red Storm easily won the rebounding battle 35-26, with no player having more than six but five pulling down at least five. Senior
Cordaro Ellis led the Bears with nine to go with his six points.
Pikeville will step out of league play on Saturday when it visits WVU Tech for a 4 p.m. tip. The Red Storm will remain home on Saturday when U.Va.-Wise comes to town.
