PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The University of Pikeville Volleyball team sent senior
Brittany Hodge out in style on Senior Night, shutting out Alice Lloyd College 3-0 by scores of 25-12, 25-16 and 25-10.
The win means the Bears will finish the season with a 6-25 record, and allowed Hodge and the rest of the 2012 UPIKE volleyball team to finish up on a very high note.
It was a dominant performance the whole way for the Bears, who were playing in front of their largest home crowd of the season and responded well to the noise. After opening the first set with an 8-2 run, UPIKE was able to cruise to the 25-12 victory.
The second set showed that the Bears came packing resolve as well, when an early lead for the visiting Lady Eagles was turned into a comfortable win for the home team. Having trailed 11-13, UPIKE outscored its opponent 14-3 the rest of the way behind the blocking skills of freshman
Chelsea Staples, who finished with seven of the team's eight blocks on the evening.
The Bears saved their best for last in the third and final set. Despite Alice Lloyd's attempt to disrupt UPIKE's early 9-2 run with a timeout, the Bears sailed to a 25-10 victory.
Hodge's teammates may have helped to get her where she is today, but when the time came it was Hodge herself who scored the winning kill with the last touch of her career. Hodge's 12 kills led the Bears, with
Stephanie Dounseroux also hitting double digits at 11 and Staples adding eight more. Hodge also provided two service aces, much to the delight of the crowd.
Dounseroux had all 27 assists for the Bears, while
Taylor Bragg paced a defensive effort with 13 digs. Hodge and freshman
Haley Johnson recorded 11 while sophomore
Samantha Ayres added 10.
