St. Catharine holds off Bears, 90-85

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Ky. – St. Catharine College scored eight straight points in a 1:41 stretch late and made all six of its free throws in the final 25.4 seconds to knock off No. 22 Pikeville 90-85 Saturday afternoon.
 
Pikeville (15-10, 7-7 in the Mid-South Conference) took what would prove to be its final lead when sophomore Josh Whitaker hit a 15 foot jumper to go up 76-74 with 4:01 left in the game.
 
St. Catharine (12-10, 8-5) tied the game on a dunk by Travis Wilkins and took a six-point lead on back-to-back threes by Brandon Johnson and Melo Smith, the latter coming with 1:50 left to make it 82-76.
 
Pikeville pulled within two, 84-82, with 31.3 seconds left on a three-point play by senior Chris McHenry, but from there the Patriots were money from the line to pull out the win.
 
The Patriots hit 53.3 percent from the floor in both halves and were 40.7 percent from the arc, hitting 11-of-27 from outside. The Bears were 48.6 percent overall but only 5-of-16 (31.3 percent) fro,m the arc.
 
Five Patriots were in double figures in the win, led by DeShawn Mitchell's 22. Wilkins, who was 7-of-8 from the floor, had 20 points and added 12 rebounds to lead his team to a 42-29 edge on the glass.
 
Johnson had 13 while Melo finished with 11.
 
McHenry led the Bears with 23 points in the game. Junior Trevor Setty followed with 22 in the loss. Senior Andrew Young tossed in 13 and led the Bears with seven rebounds.
 
Pikeville will return home to finish the regular season, beginning with a visit from Rio Grande Thursday at 8 p.m.
 
St. Catharine will be on the road Tuesday night, playing at Life (Ga.) University.
