Weather forces time adjustments on Saturday

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Due to the ice storm that hit Kentucky on Friday morning, the University of Pikeville's doubleheader at the University of Cumberlands will begin two hours later.

The women's game will tip off at 4 p.m., while the men will tipoff at 6.

The UPIKE travel party has been forced to spend an extra night in Lebanon, Tenn., where they played Cumberland University on Thursday night. A heavy layer of ice fell in the London area Friday morning. Located about 25 miles from the Cumberlands campus in Williamsburg, the Bears were scheduled to spend the night there.

The group will now make the three-plus hour drive on Saturday morning and asked for the delay to assist in the travel time.

“The relationship between Pikeville and Cumberlands has always been strong, and we appreciate Randy Vernon, the director of athletics, and his staff for their cooperation,” said Rick Bentley, sports information director and assistant athletics director, who made the request Friday afternoon. “The safety of our student-athletes is and will remain of paramount importance to us, and Coach Vernon and his staff completely concurred.”

The men's game will feature two Top 25 teams. The Bears, 18-2, are ranked No. 3 and are atop the standings in the Mid-South Conference. Cumberlands, 16-5 on the season, is ranked 25th in this week's NAIA Div. I men's basketball poll.
