Bluefield takes control early in win over UPIKE

Box Score BLUEFIELD, Va. – Four of Bluefield College's seven players in uniform were in double figures and two recorded double-doubles as the Rams knocked of the University of Pikeville 79-54 Saturday afternoon at Dome Gymnasium.
 
The Rams improved to 12-4 on the season and 4-2 in the Mid-South Conference, while the Bears slipped to 5-9 overall, 2-4 in the league.
 
Bluefield jumped out to a 17-4 lead, getting seven from Monique Robson. The key, however, was on the glass, where Janee Simmons had eight early rebounds for the Rams.
 
By the half, the Rams led 33-23. Robson had 12 points and six rebounds while Teqa McNeal added 11. No Bear had more than five points as the guests struggled to 35.7 percent shooting overall, hitting 1-of-8 from the arc and only 2-of-8 from the line.
 
After shooting only 33 percent in the first half the Rams really heated up after the break. They sank 54.5 percent of their shots and added 15 points to their lead.
 
McNeal finished with 24 to lead all scorers. Robson followed with 18 points to go with 10 rebounds, four steals and four assists.
 
Ashley White had 14 points and eight rebounds. She also had five rebounds and four steals. Simmons finished with 11 points and 13 rebounds, eight off the offensive glass.
 
Pikeville had 11 players score in the game but only one reach double figures. Freshman Kayla Day came off the bench for 11 points and added five rebounds.
 
Sophomore Sydney Mason followed with eight markers. Freshman Peyton Wright led the Bears on the glass with eight and added three blocked shots.
 
The Bears will be back in action Thursday night when they host Cumberlands. Bluefield will visit Lindsey Wilson on Thursday.
