PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – Led by three players with double-digit kills, Shawnee State (Ohio) rallied past the University of Pikeville volleyball team 3-1 (25-16, 23-25, 25-16, 25-21) on Thursday.
The team's both wore pink at the match in support of the Side-Out Foundation's Dig Pink initiative to raise money for breast cancer research.
UPIKE was led by
Haley Esquivel with nine kills, while
Sydney Hall and
Rachel Murphy both pitched in with seven each.
Sydney Morris dished out 20 assists and
Dominique Melvin finished with 10 digs and
Chelsea Staples had seven blocks.
Shawnee State got a match-high 13 kills from Ashley Galbraith, 12 from Kristi Humble and 11 by Paige Zelich. The tandem of Bonnie Huesing and Hannah Gephart finished with 23 and 20 assists, respectively.
Hitting percentage went in favor of Shawnee State for the match .220-.170 as UPIKE hit a team-best .244 in the second and fourth sets, the two frames where they reached 20 points.
With the win, Shawnee State improves to 11-6 overall and 5-4 in the Mid-South Conference, while UPIKE drops to 9-11 overall and 1-7 in league play.
Pikeville returns to the court at Noon ET on Saturday against Berea (Ky.) in the first of three matches on the day at UPIKE Gym. The Bears face Bluefield State (Va.) at 4 p.m. as well.Â
