Box Score
LEBANON, Tenn. – The University of Pikeville men's soccer team was up 1-0 at halftime, but the final score was another story as Cumberland (Tenn.) scored all five of its goals in the second half to defeat the Bears 5-1 on Friday at Lindsey Donnell Stadium.
Cooper Gaypia gave UPIKE its early lead in the 29th minute with an unassisted shot going down the right side of the box that was bent into the side net. Unfortunately, that would be the only offense for the Bears all night, getting outshot 30-11.
Tom Reilly sent in the equalizer in the 56th minute and Josh Armstrong knocked in the game winner five minutes later on a looping shot from the left side of the field.
Down 2-1, UPIKE never found an answer as the Bulldogs added scores in the 63rd, 74th and 75th minutes. The first of those three from Harry Mason came from a penalty kick after a hard UPIKE foul at the top of the box.
Cumberland led the game in fouls 14-9 and in corner-kick chances 7-3.
Gaypia led the Bears' offense off the bench with five shots and keeper;s
Diego Rivas and Alfredo Peidra split the two halves, with Rivas making three stops in the first and Piedra saving four with the five goals allowed in the second.
UPIKE is back on the field at 5 p.m. ET on Tuesday, hosting Warren Wilson at the Bob Amos Soccer Complex.
