Box Score RIO GRANDE, Ohio – Senior guard
Trevor Setty scored 20 points and pulled down 14 rebounds to lead No. 12 Pikeville past Rio Grande 88-68 Thursday night at Newt Oliver Arena.
Pikeville won for the third straight game and improved to 22-5 on the season, 13-5 in the Mid-South Conference, remaining tied for second with Georgetown, which beat Campbellsville on the road tonight.
The Bears were remarkable from the field, shooting 31-of-60 (51.7 percent) overall and 10-of-17 (58.8 percent) from the arc. In addition, they sank 16-of-21 (76.2 percent) from the line.
Rio Grande (9-19, 4-14) shot 59.1 percent in the first half but cooled to 47.8 percent for the game was the second half that saw it hit only 9-of-24 from the floor. The Red Storm was 4-of-14 (28.6 percent) from the arc and went 20-of-26 (76.9 percent) from the line.
Setty was joined by four teammates in double figures in the game. Senior guards
Chris Johnson and Jamar “Deuce” Briscoe had 13 markers each. Johnson added four assists and three steals.
Junior guard
Josh Whitaker, who had 11 quick points to get the Bears started, finished with 13, while junior
Elisha Justice came off the bench for 10.
Freshman guard D.D. Joiner led the Red Storm with 16 points and six rebounds. He was joined in double figures by senior center Dominick Haynes followed with 14 points, while junior guard Jermaine Warmack came off the bench with 13.
Pikeville will remain on the road, playing the middle of three road games in five days to finish the season on Saturday when it visits Shawnee State at 4 p.m.
Rio Grande, which was eliminated from the conference tournament with the loss, will host U.Va.-Wise on Saturday afternoon.
