ST. CATHARINE, Ky. – For the first time in University of Pikeville men's soccer history, the Bears secured a Mid-South Conference win, beating St. Catharine (Ky.) 3-2 on the road Thursday.
Pikeville was 0-43 against conference opponents heading into the match, according to results kept since 2006.
The path to getting the win on Thursday was a wild one that started with the Bears scoring first on a goal from
Cooper Gaypia delivered in from
Dean Johnson in the13th minute. St. Catharine (0-4, 0-1 MSC) countered in the 29th on a goal from Ashley Woods that took the teams into halftime tied 1-1.
There wasn't another score in the match until the 72nd minute, which started a streak of three goals in under 20 minutes.
It was Tyler McKenty scoring in the 72nd for the Patriots, giving them a 2-1 lead off an assist from Kevin Owens.
Just six minutes later UPIKE tied the match for the second time on an unassisted goal from Gaypia.
With less than three minutes left in the match, Pikeville's
Exon Menjivar headed in the final score off a cross from
Mashi Johnson, allowing the Bears' defense to hold off the Patriots the rest of the way for the win.
The Bears (3-3, 1-0 MSC) are off to their best start since 2009 when they went 4-1 through the first five matches.
Pikeville outshot St. Catharine 16-9, including a 9-5 lead in shots on goal. Gaypia paced UPIKE with five shots, including four on frame. Fouls went in favor of the Patriots 7-6, while UPIKE had the upper hand in corner kicks 7-2.
The Bears are back on the field at 7 p.m. ET on Wednesday, hosting Bluefield (Va.) at the Bob Amos Soccer Complex.
