BEREA, Ky. – Led by
Sydney Hall hitting a combined .350 for a team-high 17 kills on the night, the University of Pikeville volleyball team went 2-0 on Friday at the Spoonbread Smash hosted by Berea (Ky.). The Bears earned a pair of 3-0 wins over both Johnson (Tenn.) and Ohio Christian.
Pikeville, now 7-6 on the season, had a potent offense all night behind the setting of
Sydney Morris who finished with 52 assists in the two matches combined. Defensively, the Bears got 17 digs from
Dominique Melvin and 11 from
Haley Esquivel, while Hall and
Chelsea Staples were the leading blockers with five each.
Staples also had 12 kills, while Audi Ray added 11 and
Rachel Murphy connected on 10. Melvin, Murphy and
Taylor Bragg finished the matches with two service aces each.
Pikeville dominated Johnson, winning the first set 25-6. Hall was a force on offense, finishing with a match-high 10 kills as the Bears went on to win 25-18 and 25-17. Murphy had the most consistent match, going 5 of 6 for a .667 hitting percentage and three blocks.
As a team, UPIKE hit .394 as Hall also posted a high number after going 10-for-17 for a .588 mark.
Against Ohio Christian it was Staples with the best performance, hitting 8 of 17 swings for a kill for a .353 percentage. The Bears took one set past regulation to log the win with scores of 30-28, 25-22, 25-14.
Morris dished out 23 assists for the Bears, while Esquivel picked up eight digs and Hall finished with three blocks.
Pikeville wraps up play at the Spoonbread Smash on Saturday with matches against Alice Lloyd (Ky.) at 9 a.m. ET and the Saint Louis College of Pharmacy at 11 a.m.
