PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- For the second straight season, the University of Pikeville women's basketball team beat a ranked Georgetown team at home, topping the No. 17 Tigers 77-73 on Saturday at the East Ky. Expo Center.
UPIKE tallied a 15-6 advantage in second-chance points and outrebounded Georgetown 47-44 to hold on for the win.
Having the Tigers' 6-5 center Teonia McCune finish with just eight points and five rebounds helped, which is well below her season averages, as she battled foul trouble throughout the game.
Khalilah Quigley did a little bit of everything for the Bears, finishing with a game-high 26 points to go along with nine rebounds, six assists and a steal. Quigley hit 3-of-5 shots from behind the 3-point arc. Kandice Porter with 14 points and eight boards and Kelah Eldridge with 13 points and a couple threes helped prove the difference as well.
It was a tight game throughout, but UPIKE hit five more 3-pointers (8-3), which really helped prove the difference as it had an otherwise bad night from the field, shooting 38.6 percent, compared to 42.4 for Georgetown.
With less than three minutes to play in the first half, it was a tie game at 27-27 when Kayla Day made the second of a two-shot free throw for the Bears. Then the Tigers only scored two more points the rest of the half while UPIKE added two freebies and a three from Quigley as part of a 9-2 run to end the half.
The lead lasted for a little more than six minutes after halftime as two free throws from Ashli Mayes put Georgetown up 49-48 with 13:36 to play. From there, it was a dog fight, with the lead switching hands six more times before a three from Eldridge put UPIKE up for good at 72-69 with 1:20 on the clock.
Devanny King trimmed the lead to one with a layup in the final 30 seconds, but the Bears managed to hit 3-of-7 free throws down the stretch and Georgetown came up empty on three straight 3-pointers to end the game.
Following the next to last attempt, Courtney Haney was intentionally fouled on the rebound and a technical foul was assessed to a Tiger player. It resulted in Jamie Castle going to the line for two free throws and Haney getting to shoot one for the personal foul to further put things in UPIKE's favor.
Jessica Foster paced Georgetown with 17 points, followed by Mayes with 15 and Tralyn Woodard adding 14 off the bench.
UPIKE is back on the court at 6 p.m. ET on Thursday at St. Catharine.
