PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- Shakinah Gibson was unstoppable down low for the University of Pikeville women's basketball team, pouring in 14 points and Jamie Castle added a game-high 15 points and six assists as the Bears ripped Midway 77-61 on Sunday at UPIKE Gym.
The Bears (2-0) also got a big lift from Khalilah Quigley who flirted with a triple double. The senior from Bowie, Md., filled the box score with 10 points, 15 rebounds and nine assists. Quigley was a big part of Gibson's early success, putting together a high-low attack that was hard to stop.
Both teams struggled to take care of the ball as Midway led the turnover battle 25-20, but the Eagles shot just 27.5 percent in the first half when the Bears did the bulk of their damage, taking a 36-18 lead into the break. Midway ended up outscoring UPIKE 43-41 in the second half, but the damage had already been done.
UPIKE also took advantage of a 50-35 lead on the glass, helping it tally a 22-7 margin in second-chance points.
Jasmine Johnson led three Midway players in double figures with 13 points, while Stephanie Lewis and Karmari Boyd both finished with 10.
The Bears shot 46.4 percent from the field and started out the game on an 11-2 run that the Eagles never recovered from. Gibson accounted for eight of the 11 points as UPIKE went on to lead by as many as 18 points in the half on a three from Castle.
Next up is a pair of exhibition contests at Eastern Kentucky on Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET and Kentucky on Thursday at 7 p.m. as well.
