CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- Campbellsville was simply too good on Saturday, jumping out to a 46-20 lead at the break on its way to a 93-65 win over the University of Pikeville women's basketball team at the Powell Athletic Center.
UPIKE turned the ball over 23 times, including 18 in the first half, to allow the big early gap. Another roadblock was Daizah Kimberland, shooting 9-for-9 from the field to finish with a game-high 18 points for the Tigers.
Reserve Aundrea Matchen paced the Bears with 12 points, while Khalilah Quigley added 11 points and five boards. Kelah Eldridge joined them in double figures with 11, including three 3-pointers. UPIKE was outrebounded for the game 47-30, including 17-11 on the offensive glass.
The Tigers had no trouble getting easy buckets over the first three minutes, attacking the rim and getting a pair of jumpers to take a 12-2 lead.
A relentless half-court trap helped Campbellsville (8-0, 3-0 MSC) extend the lead to 29-13 with 7:57 left in the half after Kayla Day sank a free throw. But the next three points went to the Tigers, and then a turnover in the backcourt led to a three from Lexxus Graham to make it 35-13.
Turnovers and shooting just 34.8 percent from the field in the half put the Bears in a large hole, trailing 46-20 at halftime. UPIKE (5-2, 2-2 MSC) gave the ball up 18 times in the first 20 minutes with just four assists, compared to an eight assist, seven turnover showing for the Tigers.
It only took a few minutes for Campbellsville to increase the lead to 30 and it stayed there for the majority of the half, including a lead as large as 36 points at 79-43.
UPIKE eventually went on a 7-0 run in the final six minutes, getting the deficit back in the 20's at 81-53 on another 3-pointer from Eldridge. But it hovered back-and-forth around the 30-point mark until the final buzzer.
The Bears return to action at 6 p.m. ET on Tuesday, traveling to Alice Lloyd in Pippa Passes, Ky.
