PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Pikeville women's basketball team held visiting UVa.-Wise to 38 percent shooting from the field as Kelah Eldridge and Khalilah Quigley both tallied 20 points to lead the Bears in a 93-70 rout of the Cavaliers on Saturday.
It was nearly a triple problem of 20-point scorers for the Cavaliers (2-3) as Shekinah Gibson finished a bucket short with 18 points. Kandice Porter joined the trio in double figures with 12 points and Courtney Haney was all hustle off the bench with 10 rebounds, four points and a block.
UPIKE (7-2) led 43-29 at halftime before outscoring UVa.-Wise 51-41 in the second half. The Cavaliers got 18 points from Blair Harding and Taylor Sandidge chipped in with 12 points and five boards. The post presence of Porter and Gibson played a large role in the Cavs' poor shooting as they blocked three shots each, allowing the Bears to block a season-high nine shots.
Not only did Eldridge and Quigley have a big day scoring the basketball, they also showed great vision dishing it out as both tallied a game-high five assists. Reserve guard Kayla Day also dished out five dimes as the Bears finished with a 23-10 advantage in assists.
Ten minutes into the first half, UPIKE had built a double-digit lead at 24-14 on an Eldridge free throw. The Bears never trailed in the game and were tied just once at 2-2, instead UPIKE went on to lead by as many as 17 points in the half on a fastbreak bucket from Gibson.
The lead swelled to 28 points with less than four minutes to play at 87-59 on a baseline jumper from Aundrea Matchen. All the Cavs could do to try and get back in it was put up a flurry of threes, but rarely did they find success, shooting just 3-of-19 from behind the arc.
UPIKE hits the road on Monday, taking on Montreat at 7 p.m. ET in Montreat, N.C.
