PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- For the first time in program history, the University of Pikeville men's soccer team posted a Mid-South Conference win on its home pitch, topping Georgetown 3-1 on senior night Monday at the Bob Amos Complex.
First-year UPIKE head coach Adam Johnson stays undefeated against the Tigers as the Bears also beat Georgetown in the season finale last season when Johnson was coaching in an interim role. With the win, UPIKE enters the MSC Championship with a 3-8-1 overall record and 1-5-1 showing in league play.
The Bears are expected to be handed the No. 7 seed, but figuring out who they will play with the No. 2 seed is to be determined soon by conference officials. Campbellsville, Cumberland (Tenn.) and St. Catharine are all tied in second place at 5-2 in MSC play and all three split games with each other during the season.
Further tie-break procedures, including record against the next highest seeded teams and record against common non-conference opponents will be used to decide. Ultimately a coin flip could be used if nothing else changes the tie.
Tallying the first win since Oct. 7 on Monday was helped along by Chase Johnson who dished out two assists for a pair of quick first-half goals. Mashi Johnson struck first in the second minute on a calm and collected finish near the goal, while Exon Menjivar scored in the seventh on a towering header off a Chase Johnson cross.
Mashi Johnson made it 3-0 at halftime by adding a third goal in the 20th minute on a chip over the head of Tiger goalkeeper Tyler Hafer to end the scoring for the Bears.
Georgetown (5-12, 1-6 MSC) finally got on the board in the 83rd minute as Jordan Murdoch took a pass from Tyler Sexton and finished it through a pack of Bear defenders in front of the goal.
Hafer finished with three saves and three goals allowed, while Diego Rivas collected five saves for UPIKE. Shots went in favor of the Bears 14-7, while both teams put six shots on frame.
MSC Championship play is scheduled to start at campus sites on Nov. 8.
