Box Score PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Cody Chagnon blasted a home run in the ninth inning get the University of Pikeville within a run of Campbellsville (Ky.), but the Tigers got two straight fly outs to end the game and preserve a 4-3 win on Saturday at Johnnie LeMaster Field.
Chagnon led the Bears (19-17, 6-9 MSC) at the plate with two RBIs and a sacrifice fly added to his home run, while shortstop
Chaz Contreras tallied a pair of hits in the loss. First baseman
Nicolas Gonzales added an RBI double with a run scored.
Zak Sutherland (4-3) took the loss on the mound after throwing a complete game while allowing four runs on 12 hits with four strikeouts. Sutherland was dealing with a 2-1 lead after four innings but had the tying run score on a double-play ball in the fifth and fell behind with a walk and an error in a two-run eighth inning for the Tigers.
Bret DeRooy also went the distance for Campbellsville, giving up three runs on six hits with six strikeouts and just one out. The Tigers booted just one error in the win, compared to two for UPIKE.
Third baseman Ales Scanlan had a big day for the Tigers, picking up three hits with an RBI double and a run scored.
Campbellsville opened up with a 1-0 lead in the second inning as right fielder Ryan Squires hit a one-out single and came all the way home on a double from Scanlan to center. That lead held up until the bottom of the fourth when UPIKE left fielder
Zach Nothwehr scored from first on a double from Gonzales.
The Bears broke the 1-1 tie later that inning when Chagnon hit a fly ball to right field deep enough to allow Gonzales to hustle home from third. The Tigers came back quick, making it a 2-2 game the next inning with Scanlan scoring from third on a ball hit into a double play.
Two scoreless frames followed before the Tigers tallied their last two runs of the game on a pair of singles in the eighth inning. Campbellsville started the rally with a walk, then has a player reach on an error to allow the go-ahead run to score on a single to center field.
Down two runs with two outs left, Chagnon hit his home run over the fence in left field, but the rally didn't last long with two fly outs to bring the game to a close. The teams are scheduled to finish the final two games of the weekend series at Noon ET on Sunday.
