Volleyball Struggles against Red-Hot St. Catharine

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – St. Catharine hit a blistering .479 on its way to a 3-0 shutout win over the University of Pikeville volleyball team on Thursday night at the UPIKE Gym.

The Bears, which managed only a .014 hitting mark, dropped to an even 7-7 overall and 0-5 mark in Mid-South Conference play. The Patriots, who are receiving votes in the NAIA top-25 poll, improved to 15-4 overall and 3-1 in league play.

UPIKE will get its next chance to snap a five-match losing streak on Thursday when it travels to Shawnee State in Portsmouth, Ohio.

Hitting .042 and .118 in the first and second sets, the Bears were able to put up a fight before dropping both frames 25-14, but the offense fell apart in the third set for a -.308 mark as St. Catharine was in control scoring the first 14 points of the set with Jodie Klein staying on serve throughout the run.

While no other Bear had more than two kills, Rachel Murphy stood out with five on 13 swings for a team-best .385 mark, but other than that it was tough to find any points on offense. Usually a strong blocking team, UPIKE couldn't find much success there either as four players finished with one block assist.

St. Catharine's Rebecca Just made things tough on UPIKE all night, connecting on 15 of her 23 attack attempts, while Cat Hall controlled the net with three blocks. The Bears led the match just once during all three sets when it took a 1-0 lead in the first frame on a set error by Jordan Strickland who wound up with 28 assists.

The Bear Report
  • UPIKE's last win came on Sept. 6 in the championship match of the Sewanee Invitational when it won four matches in two days.
  • Morris, with 32 kills on 80 attempts is the Bears' most efficient attacker at .313 percent, while Chelsea Staples leads the team with 121 kills at a .232 clip.
  • Pfaadt has been a great asset on defense and on serve, the freshman leads the team with 177 digs and 23 aces.
  • The five kills for Murphy against St. Catharine were the most for the sophomore since tallying six in the Sewanee title match against Oglethorpe. Her season high is nine against LaGrange and she's also seen some time at setter, finishing with seven assists against Kentucky Christian.
