Men’s Soccer Topped by St. Catharine 3-1

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – St. Catharine broke open a 1-1 tie with a pair of second-half goals to top the University of Pikeville men's soccer team 3-1 on Saturday night at the Bob Amos Complex.

Ashley Woods scored first for the Patriots in the 55th minute off a cross from Marvin Wesselburg, but the lead was short lived as Mateus Meira took advantage of a foul in the box by finishing a penalty kick to knot the score.

But even with the momentum of the free-kick score, the Bears struggled to stop Woods who once again connected off a pass from Wesselburg in the 70th minute to help St. Catharine (5-2, 2-0 MSC) take the lead for good. Only a minute later, Wesselburg himself got into the scoring act with the game's final goal.

UPIKE (1-1, 0-1 MSC) outshot the Patriots 16-11, including a narrow 7-6 margin in shots on goal, but St. Catharine obtained more corner-kick chances at 6-4 and finished with more saves at 6-3. Patriot keeper C.J. Powell made four stops in the first half and two in the second while only allowing the one PK goal. UPIKE's Diego Rivas' saves went two in the first half and one in the second.

In a foul-heavy contest, St. Catharine was called for 24 compared to 18 for the Bears. There were also five yellow cards shown in the contest, with the Patriots picking up three.

The Bears are back on the pitch at 2 p.m. ET on Sunday, traveling to West Virginia Tech in Montgomery, W. Va.
