Women’s Basketball Wins Block Party against West Virginia Tech

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- The UPIKE and West Virginia Tech women each sent back eight blocks and combined for 46 turnovers, but in the end it was the Bears coming away with a 93-78 win after a furious late rally on Wednesday night in the East Ky. Expo Center.

It was only a 79-76 lead for UPIKE with two and a half minutes to play. But the Bears turned up the heat defensively and allowed the Golden Bears to score just two more points, finishing the game on a 14-2 run to come away with the 15-point win.

During the end-game rally for UPIKE, the Golden Bears had a sequence of six straight possessions with a turnover before finally scoring on a free throw by Nia Nolan. By that time the Bears were leading by 11 and West Virginia Tech missed its final four field-goal attempts.

Khalilah Quigley paced UPIKE (16-5) with a career-high 28 points and nine rebounds, while Kandice Porter added a career best as well with 22 points along with seven boards and two blocks. Kelah Eldridge finished with a balanced 18 points, five rebounds, six assists and three steals. Eldridge's rebound and steal totals matched her career highs.

UPIKE freshman Erin Swatzel was the catalyst for the big block numbers, swatting a season-best four shots in the first half alone.

Being outshot from the field 40.6 to 38.8 percent, UPIKE's biggest asset was its free-throw shooting, making 25-of-31 attempts compared to 15 of 26 for West Virginia Tech. The Bears also outrebounded Tech 51-44, leading to a 26-13 lead in second-chance points.

Nolan led the Golden Bears (6-13) with 22 points, four assists and three steals, but she also lost nine turnovers, leading to Tech's 28-18 lead in giveaways.

The first half was an even affair with the lead changing hands seven times. In fact, the Golden Bears were up by five at 12-7 on a Cheyanna Lusk layup and held a 19-18 lead less than 10 minutes to go until halftime. UPIKE eventually went up by seven on a layup by Jamie Castle in the final 10 seconds, but Noelani Woodson buried a half-court shot  to make it 43-39 UPIKE at the break.

While its lead went down to a single point on multiple occasions in the second half, UPIKE never gave it up and led by eight with five minutes to go. West Virginia Tech made a late push with a 6-0 run to make it 78-76, but UPIKE scored 15 of the next 17 points to put the Golden Bears away.

UPIKE is right back in action at 5:30 p.m. ET on Thursday, hosting Ohio Christian in the expo center.
