Women’s Basketball Drops Milligan 92-70

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- It wasn't a thing of beauty, but in the end the University of Pikeville women's basketball team came away with a 92-70 win over Milligan (Tenn.) on Wednesday in the East Ky. Expo Center.

Neither team shot over 45 percent from the field (UPIKE 45%, Milligan 41.2%) and the Buffaloes gave up 27 turnovers, making the action, at times, tough to watch.

But there were still some bright spots for the Bears (13-4), including Jamie Castle dishing out 10 assists to go along with eight points and three rebounds. Devin Conley found the bottom of the net from 3-point range four times to finish tied for the team high with 16 points, while Khalilah Quigley got going late, scoring 14 points in the second half, to finish with 16 as well.

Milligan's Hayley Wyrick ended up with 15 points and seven rebounds, but it wasn't nearly enough to overcome the bounty of turnovers, of which she had five herself.

The Buffaloes (3-13) never led in the game, but tied the score at 19 all with 8:23 left in the first half. Needing a spark, the Bears got back-to-back baskets from Erin Swatzel to complete a 7-0 run over the next two minutes. The lead grew to 11 on back-to-back threes from Conley and by halftime UPIKE was enjoying a 40-27 advantage.

UPIKE's lead stayed in double digits the rest of the game, dropping as low as 10 points twice, but growing to as many as 25 points too when Quigley's free throw made it 92-67 with just over two minutes to go.

Depth and turnovers proved the difference in the end as UPIKE's bench outscored Milligan 52-24 and the Bears tallied a 26-3 advantage in points off turnovers. Free-throw shooting had an impact as well as UPIKE shot 80 percent, making 12-of-15 shots.

The Bears are back in action at 3 p.m. ET on Saturday against Carlow (Pa.) in the East Ky. Expo Center.
