PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- Some days nearly everything goes right, and for the University of Pikeville men's basketball team, Sunday afternoon's 118-53 win over Ohio State-Mansfield fit the bill. The second-ranked Bears shot 61 percent from the field and put a whopping seven players into double figures scoring at UPIKE Gym.
As UPIKE filled it up, including 70 percent shooting in the second half, the Mavericks finished at just 33 percent for the game while hitting just six of their 34 3-point attempts. Mansfield also only got to the free-throw line five times, compared to the 19-of-27 showing for the Bears.
Colt Chapman led all scorers with 16 points and Christian Leach added 15 off the bench. UPIKE's three starting guards, Trey Rakes, K.K. Simmons and Macari Brooks finished with 14 points each.
With the rout, UPIKE improves to 6-0 on the season and won its nation's-best 47th straight game at home. Three of the wins came in the past three days as the Bears logged games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Fatigue didn't seem to be an issue for UPIKE as it scored the first 11 points of the game and went on to outscore the Mavericks 20-4 in the first eight minutes. By halftime it was 44-24 as Uzonna Akazi hit a free throw to end the first-half scoring.
Mansfield got the lead under 20 briefly in the second half when Jalen Jones' jumper made it 46-28, but the Bears followed with a 12-2 spurt, then added a 14-0 run a few minutes later to lead by as many as 65 points in the half.
Once the three-minute mark hit, the Mavericks failed to score again as UPIKE tallied the final 12 points of the contest.
The Bears will take a well-earned break before returning to the court at 7 p.m. ET on Thursday against Bluefield (Va.) at the East Ky. Expo Center.
