LAURINBURG, N.C. -- After opening the 2015 season with a pair of wins at St. Andrews on Saturday, the University of Pikeville baseball team ran into trouble on Sunday, losing 18-2 against the Knights in the finale of the weekend series.
UPIKE trailed just 1-0 heading into the bottom of the third inning, but St. Andrews caught fire at the plate to the tune of 10 runs to take an 11-0 lead. The Knights added seven more runs over the next two innings as all the Bears could muster was two of their own in the sixth.
The troublesome third included a three-run homer from Rancel Rosado and nine hits for the Knights while also drawing a walk to essentially put the game away.s
Dalton Dahley took the loss for the Bears after allowing six earned runs on five hits in 2 1/3 innings with three strikeouts and two walks. Reliever Michael Vaquera came in for 2/3 of an inning but couldn't get in a groove either, allowing seven runs on six hits.
Demetrius Ingram picked up the win after delivering a strong 5 1/3 innings with allowing just one run on five hits with four strikeouts.
On a day where offense lacked for UPIKE, Rashawn Farrell fared the best, driving in a run with his only at-bat. Connor Osborne went 1 for 1 as well with a double and Nicolas Gonzales added one hit, a walk and a stolen base. Â
The Bears will get a chance to bounce back on Feb. 14 with a doubleheader against West Virginia Tech in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
