PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- Trailing 3-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, the University of Pikeville baseball team put together five runs on two hits, along with the help of two errors, to come back and beat visiting Asbury on Tuesday at Johnnie LeMaster Field.
The Bears (10-7) had two outs and two players on base after being hit by pitches in the pivotal sixth when centerfielder Mike Peluffo hit a single to left field which ultimately scored two runs after the ball was misplayed in the outfield.
Now up by one at 4-3, UPIKE kept pouring it on as pinch runner Scottie Whitaker scored on another error in the infield and designated hitter Josh Bailey roped an RBI triple and later scored himself to build the 7-3 lead.
Asbury (2-8) and UPIKE traded single runs in the first and second innings, followed by the Eagles taking a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth after tying it up with back-to-back doubles before taking the lead on a sacrifice fly by shortstop McKenzie Sullivan.
Logan Sales took over on the mound in the sixth inning facing a 3-2 deficit before going on to allow no runs on two hits over the next four innings to grab his first win of the season. Dalton Dahley started, scattering five hits for three runs with four strikeouts and four walks in five innings.
Brenden Wells, the Asbury starter, took the loss after giving up five runs on six hits with two strikeouts and two free passes in 5 2/3 innings.
Bailey was the only Bear with multiple hits, going 2 for 4 at the plate with an RBI, walk, run scored and the triple.
