MOREHEAD, Ky. -- The University of Pikeville softball team saw its six-game winning streak come to an end on Wednesday with a pair of 4-2 and 8-0 losses at Morehead State.
Behind strong pitching from Sydney Morris, the Bears and Eagles were tied 2-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning of the opener, but Morehead State hot back-to-back home runs that proved to be the game winners.
Morris threw all six innings for UPIKE, scattering seven hits for four runs with four strikeouts and three walks. Mackenzie Grossman went the distance for the Eagles as well, earning the win while allowing just two hits and striking out two batters.
UPIKE scored first in the second inning when third baseman Breana Pineda was hit by a pitch, advanced to third and eventually came home on a wild throw from Eagles catcher Laine Simmons. Morehead State answered with a run in the bottom of the inning, and then led by a run after the third.
Designated player Hawley Ill tied things up again at 2-2 after smoking an RBI single to right field in the top of the fifth before the back-to-back homers proved the difference.
Game two saw the Eagles catch fire at the plate, outhitting the Bears 10-1 to put together the 8-0 win in five innings. Tanna Seuferer was dominant for Morehead State in that span, striking out seven and allowing the lone hit.
Ill started in the circle for UPIKE and lasted 3 2/3 innings while scattering 10 hits for eight runs. Lauren Barnes came in for the last out in the bottom of the fourth with a strikeout.
Pineda tallied UPIKE's hit, while right fielder Tressa Watson did the bulk of the damage for Morehead State, going 2 for 2 with three RBIs, a walk, run scored and two doubles.
UPIKE is back on the field at 4 p.m. ET on Friday in the Mid-South Conference opener against Georgetown at Paul Butcher Field.
