PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- It was a scoreless game for three innings until Shawnee State broke through for four runs in the fourth on its way to a 12-1 win over the University of Pikeville baseball team in eight innings on Saturday.
A.J. Carkner (2-3) was dealing for the Bears, handing out five strikeouts before SSU connected on three straight singles and a sacrifice fly to lead off the top of the fourth. Logan Sales replaced Carkner to get the final two outs, but the damage had been done to the tune of five runs on six hits.
UPIKE eventually got on the board with a run in the seventh on a single by right fielder Connor Osborne, but that would be the Bears' final at-bat as SSU built an 11-run lead with four runs in the eighth.
Derek Moore (2-4) went the distance to pick up the win on the mound, giving up an unearned run on eight hits with five strikeouts and no walks.
Osborne paced UPIKE at the plate as the only player with two hits, including the lone RBI. No Pikeville players hit for extra bases in the loss.
Left fielder Mason Wisner collected three hits, including a double, for four RBIs, while second baseman Mauro Olivarria drove in three runs with two hits and a walk.
UPIKE returns to action against SSU with a doubleheader on Sunday starting at Noon ET at Johnnie LeMaster Field. Â Â
