PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- Georgetown combined to outhit the University of Pikeville softball team 27-6 in a pair of 10-1 and 9-1 wins in Mid-South Conference play on Sunday at Paul Butcher Field.
UPIKE hung around in both games but came up against some huge innings from the Tigers in the later stages of each contest. Georgetown scored eight runs in the final three innings of game one and turned a one-run lead into a 7-1 game after scoring five runs over the fourth and fifth innings of the nightcap.
Centerfielder Brandi Jo Howard put together a solid day at the plate, combining for two hits and three walks while scoring both of the Bears' runs. Left fielder Kayla Brown and third baseman Breana Pineda roped doubles in the opener, but not much else went right on offense for UPIKE.
Georgetown first baseman Marissa Massie hit a grand slam in the fifth inning of the first game, turning a 2-1 deficit for the Bears into a 6-1 lead with one swing of the bat. Centerfielder Sandy Young paced the Tigers in game two, going 3 for 4 with a home run for three RBIs.
Lauren Barnes and Sydney Morris took the losses in the circle for UPIKE with Morris faring the best with seven strikeouts before giving up the grand slam. Kayla Williams and Sydney Goyette were the winners for Georgetown.
The Tigers only mustered 2-1 leads through the first several innings of both contests, but the bats came alive late in both as Georgetown scored 13 of its 19 runs in the fifth inning or later.
UPIKE is off until 3 p.m. ET on Tuesday, taking on Shawnee State in Portsmouth, Ohio.Â
