COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Game one between the University of Pikeville and Lindsey Wilson baseball teams was a 14-inning marathon that saw the Blue Raiders take a 9-6 win, then game two was won handily by LWC 22-1 on Saturday at Egnew Park.
The wins give Lindsey Wilson the series sweep over UPIKE as it improves to 21-11 overall and 7-2 in the Mid-South Conference. The Bears drop to 12-14 overall and 0-9 in league play.
Next up for UPIKE is a non-conference trip to Cincinnati-Clermont at 1 p.m. ET on Thursday in Batavia, Ohio.
Shortstop Jacob DiThomas made the most of his plate appearances on Saturday, combining for three hits, three RBIs and a double for UPIKE. DiThomas had one of two extra-base hits for the Bears on the day with the other coming from right fielder Erik Tucker in game two.
Lindsey Wilson got a monster day from first baseman Aaron Ashton with four hits, two walks, two RBIs and a home run. His blast was one of six Blue Raiders home runs on the day as shortstop Fabian Chorino and right fielder Alex Bautista hit one in each game and second baseman Daryl Blaskovich added one in the lopsided game two.
Winning pitchers for Lindsey Wilson were Chris Erker (3-4) in game one, allowing two runs on four hits with nine strikeouts in 9 1/3 innings, and Scott Sebald (6-1) in the nightcap, scattering seven hits for a run with 10 strikeouts and no walks in six frames.
Taking the losses for the Bears were Logan Sales (1-1) in the opener after allowing four runs on eight hits with two strikeouts in four innings and Josh Bailey (1-3) in game two after scattering seven hits for nine runs with two strikeouts and five walks in a 2 2/3 inning start.
The day nearly started much different for UPIKE as it had a 5-4 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth in game one, but Ashton had different plans. The first baseman belted a leadoff home run to tie things at 5-5 and send the game into five more innings of free baseball.
UPIKE took a 6-5 lead in the 12th inning, but once again the Blue Raiders bounced back. Centerfielder Edgar LeBron hit a two-out single, went to second after a hit batter, then scored on designated hitter Victor Nazario's single through the hole at short.
The Bears came up empty on their next two at-bats before Bautista ended things in the bottom of the 14th on his first-pitch homer over the left-field fence.
After the tough luck in the opener, things fell apart quickly for the Bears in game two as Lindsey Wilson poured on 17 runs over the first four innings, including eight scores in the bottom of the fourth. The Blue Raiders led the game in hits 18-7 and got help from eight Bear errors in the field.Â
