Softball Sweeps MSC Doubleheader over Cumberlands

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Pikeville softball team snapped a four-game skid in style on Tuesday, earning a 2-0 win over one of the Mid-South Conference's top pitchers in game one against Cumberlands before winning 11-2 in five innings against the Patriots in the nightcap at Paul Butcher Field.

The doubleheader sweep moved the Bears (11-11, 5-7 MSC) into a three-way tie for fourth place in the league standings with Cumberlands (15-10, 5-7 MSC) and Cumberland.

The Patriots' starter in the opener, Nichol Chesley, was 11-1 in the circle heading into the game, but she didn't get any run support and allowed the Bears two runs on five hits with five strikeouts and three walks to take her second loss of the season.

Syndey Morris was unflappable in the tight contest, improving to an even 5-5 on the season after scattering four hits for no runs with six strikeouts and no walks in seven innings.

UPIKE produced what would be the winning run in the second inning when third baseman Breana Pineda singled, moved to third on two stolen bases before coming home on a wild throw by the catcher. The Bears added some insurance in the sixth as Pineda tripled and came home again on shortstop Hollie Hinkles' hit.

Following one of the closest games of the season, UPIKE came alive at the plate in game two, scoring a season-high 11 times to run-rule Cumberlands in the fifth inning. It all started in the first inning when the Bears scored five runs on five hits, including a two-RBI double from catcher Eady Beth Connally.

Up 8-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning, UPIKE got a two-RBI triple from Pineda to bring the night to a close.

Taryn Sigl (1-3) took the loss after giving up five runs on five hits in 2/3 of an inning. Lauren Barnes (3-2) went 4 1/3 solid frames to pick up the win, allowing two runs on six hits with six strikeouts and no free passes.

Pineda had one of the best hitting days of her UPIKE career, going a combined 4 for 5 with three RBIs, two triples and four runs scored. Connally wasn't bad either in game two, going a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate with two doubles, three RBIs and two runs scored.

Hawley Ill, who also pitched 2/3 of an inning to close game two, drove in a run on three hits and score three times herself in the five-inning game.

UPIKE is back in action at 3 p.m. ET on Wednesday, hosting West Virginia Tech.
