Baseball Takes Two from Goshen on Sunday

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- The sun was finally shining and the University of Pikeville baseball team took advantage, posting a pair of 4-1 and 7-6 wins over Goshen (Ind.) on Sunday afternoon at Johnnie LeMaster Field.

A.J. Carkner went the distance to pick up the win in the opener, allowing just one run on seven hits with five strikeouts in seven innings. The win was tougher to come by in game two, but James Brooks eventually got it done, allowing five runs on six hits in five innings of work.

Shortstop Jacob DiThomas had a big day at the plate, collecting a combined four hits with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored. Centerfielder Josh Bailey was perfect in the nightcap, going 3 for 3 with two RBIs and a run.

Goshen (2-7) struck first in game one, tallying a single run in the second inning. The lead lasted until the fifth inning when the Bears finished out the scoring in the game with four runs on three hits and with the help of two Goshen miscues.

Catcher Cody Chagnon led off the inning with a double and his courtesy runner Scottie Whitaker scored the tying run on third baseman Erik Manning's single. The winning run was scored by Erik Manning when he stole home during a run down between first and second base.

Goshen picked up another early lead in game two, this time around going up 3-0 in the top of the first inning. UPIKE responded with five runs over the first two innings before being tied up at 5-5 in the top of the third.

It was still knotted up in the bottom of the fifth when Bailey bunted for a base hit and came around to score when Chagnon's fly ball to right center was dropped. The Bears added one more in the sixth helping them hold off Goshen which scored one more run in the seventh.

There was plenty of offense in game two with UPIKE outhitting Goshen 8-7, while both teams ended up with three errors.

UPIKE is back in action against Goshen at Noon ET on Monday for another doubleheader.
