PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- St. Catharine outhit the University of Pikeville baseball team 17-9 with five extra-base hits on its way to a 14-2 win in seven innings on Sunday at Johnnie LeMaster Field.
UPIKE left nine runners on base despite getting two hits each from shortstop Jacob DiThomas, pitcher Josh Bailey and catcher Cody Chagnon. None of their hits drove in any runs as only centerfielder Mike Peluffo tallied an RBI with a double in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Patriot starter Daniel Lerma (1-2) scattered seven hits, but got outs when it mattered, only allowing one run with five strikeouts in six innings.
The Bears went through five pitchers, while starter Josh Bailey (1-5) was stuck with the loss after giving up four runs on three hits in 1 2/3 innings. Logan Sales pitched the next three with five runs allowed, Jared Masters allowed a hit in 1 1/3 innings and Michael Vaquera allowed five runs on six hits without registering an out in the seventh.
Centerfielder Harold Diaz paced St. Catharine going 3-for-5 with a double, four RBIs and two runs scored.
After falling behind 4-0 in the top of the second, third baseman Erik Manning stole home to put the Bears on the board, but they wouldn't score again until Peluffo's double in the seventh. In between, St. Catharine added two runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and five in the seventh.
The regularly scheduled nine-inning game was shortened to seven with the 10-run rule in effect.
UPIKE is back in action at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday at Asbury in Wilmore, Ky.Â
