LEBANON, Tenn. -- The University of Pikeville softball team is in sole possession of fourth place in the Mid-South Conference standings heading into the final two weeks of the regular season after tallying a sweep of Cumberland with two 7-1 wins on Friday.
UPIKE (18-16, 10-12 MSC) matched its best win total in MSC play since 2011 with the wins after the Bulldogs struggled to score, especially in game one when they stranded 10 runners on base while scoring just the one run.
In game two, Sydney Morris' performance in the circle had a lot to do with the lack of Cumberland offense as she scattered six hits for one run with eight strikeouts in a complete seven inning to improve to 8-6 on the season.
Lauren Barnes (5-5) earned the win in the opener after allowing one run on nine hits with two strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings before Morris came in to record the final two outs. Cumberland had scored its lone run of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning on a double by Giselle Delgado.
After adding a single shortly after the run, UPIKE went to the bullpen for Morris who got a head start on her game-two start.
Right fielder Sydney Beckelhymer led the Bears in the opener, going 2 for 2 at the plate to drive in two runs while also recording two sacrifice hits, a double and stolen base. Centerfielder Brandi Jo Howard also drove in two runs on two hits with a double and stolen base and catcher Eady Beth Connally joined them with two hits, including driving in one run.
UPIKE's lead was only 1-0 heading into the fifth inning when it scored two runs in the top of the inning and four more in the sixth.
With Morris keeping the Bulldogs' bats at bay in the nightcap, Connally went to work again at the plate. The sophomore went a perfect 4 for 4 with a double and drove in three runs. Howard added two more hits and an RBI and third baseman Breana Pineda added two hits as well and scored twice.
This time around UPIKE scored the first four runs of the game in just three innings, helping it take a 4-1 lead into the top of the fourth inning. The rest of the scoring for the game happened in that frame as Kayla Brown singled and eventually hustled home on a wild pitch, while Connally finished things off with a two-RBI double.
UPIKE's next action is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET on Monday against Shawnee State (Ohio) in the home finale at Paul Butcher Field. Â
