2015 MSC Championship Central
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- Dalton Dahley wasn't ready to go home, allowing just two hits with five strikeouts, as eighth-seeded University of Pikeville shut out No. 4-seed Georgetown 2-0 in the loser's bracket of the 2015 Mid-South Conference Baseball Championship on Thursday morning.
UPIKE, which finished the regular-season without a win over a conference opponent, tallied one when it mattered as it moves on to a 1 p.m. ET matchup on Friday with the winner of Lindsey Wilson and Shawnee State at Bowling Green Ballpark.
The Bears (16-27) outhit the Tigers 6-2 and got a boost from four Georgetown errors, two of which led to the Bears scoring a run on one hit in the first inning. Centerfielder Josh Bailey hit a two-out single, stole second, moved to third on an error before ultimately rushing home on a wild throw by catcher Jovan Hernandez.
Pikeville held on to that 1-0 lead for the next seven innings until it added an insurance run in the ninth on an RBI single from left fielder Zach Nothwehr.
Georgetown (18-18) put runners on first and second in the bottom of the ninth after a walk and hit batter. But with two outs, Michael Encinas brought the game to a close with a groundout to third base.
Dahley improved to an even 4-4 with the win as his defense made plays behind him as Georgetown left five on base for the game. Shawn Kennedy II took the loss (0-2) after allowing an unearned run on five hits with six strikeouts, but his team's four errors were too much to overcome.
No one in the game had more than one hit and none went for extra bases, but Nothwehr got the most done with an RBI and also drawing a walk. First baseman Nicolas Gonzales and Bailey both stole a base. Â Â
