Starting Pitching Helps Baseball to Sweep of Berea

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- An 11-game losing streak came to an end for the University of Pikeville baseball team on Monday and starting pitchers Bryce Carden and Dalton Dahley had a lot to do with it in a pair of 11-4 and 4-1 wins at Johnnie LeMaster Field.

Both pitchers threw a complete-game seven innings with Carden scattering eight hits for four runs with six strikeouts in the opener and Dahley allowing a run on four hits with nine strikeouts to finish the sweep.

UPIKE's (14-18) offense wasn't bad either as it combined to outhit the Mountaineers 18-12, including a 9-4 showing in game two. The Bears also committed just two errors in the field all day, compared to seven for Berea.

The sloppy fielding helped out UPIKE's arms as only one of the four runs given up by Carden were earned and Berea's one run in game two did not go against Dahley.

Catcher Cody Chagnon had a big day at the plate for the Bears, going a comvined 4 for 6 with four RBIs and two doubles. Right fielder Eric Tucker also doubled and drove in a run in game one, while designated hitter Mike Peluffo had the hot bat in game two, picking up two RBIs on two hits, including a double.

Berea (6-19) took 1-0 leads in the top of the first inning in both games but failed to capitalize. Instead, UPIKE scored 10 runs in the next four innings of the opener before the Mountaineers scored three late runs in the sixth.

Game two's comeback took longer to produce as the Bears didn't score until fifth inning when they tallied all four of their scores.

Tucker started the rally after reaching on a walk and coming home on a wild pitch, then Peluffo hit his double to left field to score two more runs. Centerfielder Josh Bailey ended the scoring spree with an RBI single to center.

UPIKE is back in action at 1 p.m. ET on Tuesday at Alice Lloyd in Pippa Passes, Ky.
