BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- A brief one-run lead was a good start for the fourth-seeded University of Pikeville softball team, but Georgetown answered with five runs in the bottom of the first inning to take control of the game on its way to a 7-1 win on Friday afternoon at the MSC Championship.
The loss brings UPIKE's 2015 season to a close with a 20-19 overall record and 11-13 mark in MSC play. Georgetown advances in the loser's bracket of the championship with an 18-17 record and will face top-seeded Campbellsville at 7 p.m. ET.
While Georgetown racked up its seven runs in the first two innings, none of them were earned against starting pitcher Lauren Barnes as the defense struggled with five errors in the field. Barnes (5-8) lasted three innings as seven runs scored on just four hits. She left the game without a strikeout.
Sydney Morris threw the final three innings for the Bears, allowing two hits and striking out three Tigers. Georgetown and UPIKE failed to score over the final five frames.
Kayla Williams picked up the win in the circle, improving to 8-6 after scattering three hits for one run with three strikeouts in four innings. Sydney Goyette pitched the final three innings for the save with just one hit allowed.
All four of the Bears' hits came from left fielder Kayla Brown and catcher Eady Beth Connally. Both finished 2 for 3 at the plate, while Brown scored the lone run. Second baseman Hollie Hinkle tallied UPIKE's RBI on her sacrifice fly in the first inning that allowed Brown to tag up for the score.
The wild bottom of the first included two UPIKE errors during the first three at bats, six stolen bases and a two-RBI double from Katie Young. The Bears finally got out of the inning when Young was tagged out stretching to third on a fielder's choice.
UPIKE wasn't without chances to rally back as it stranded five runners on base, but ultimately the errors halted those plans. The tough luck continued into the final inning when the Bears grounded into a double play and popped out to third base to bring the tournament run to a close.  Â
